I spent 3.5 hours reading reviews from experts and users. In summary, this is what combat sport practitioners think about the Fairtex BGV-1 “Tight Fit” Muay Thai Boxing Gloves:
Reasons to Buy:
– Majority of users complimented the brand on the high-quality workmanship (stitching) and materials (leather) used.
– One of the most distinctive features of the BGV-1 is a lack of grip bar which makes them more flexible and suitable for clinching.
– Several reviewers commented that there are plenty of colors and designs to choose from.
– A number of users noted that the BGV-1 looks more compact than other brands. The streamlined design makes them more proportionate to body size particularly for smaller boxers.
– A few reviewers recommend the BGV-1 for more seasoned martial artists as the padding gives a “snap” to provide great feedback when you hit the bags and pads.
Reason Not to Buy:
– Some users mentioned that the padding is difficult to break in.
– Quite a number of reviewers say that the BGV-1 were unsuitable for sparring due to the dense padding which make getting hit in the face an especially unpleasant experience compared to other brands.
– Several users of the BGV-1 dislike the lack of a wrist bar as they find that they find it more difficult to make a fist.
– A few people highlighted that the BGV-1s were less suitable for beginners as the gloves had less padding in the knuckles.
– A couple of reviewers thought that the cuffs could be a little wider to provide a little more support.
Editor’s Take:
Fairtex BGV-1 is the brand’s flagship boxing gloves collection and remains one of the most popular and best-selling Muay Thai gloves in the world. The streamlined design coupled with optimal cushioning protection and top-quality leather make them an excellent choice for most levels. Although not without its share of critics, the pros outweigh the cons for the BGV-1. The sales and good reviews on Amazon and many review sites speak for themselves.
The Fairtex BGV-1 retails for around 2000 baht in Bangkok, which is the average going price for most of the respectable Thai brands. On Amazon, they go for around 70-80USD which is a very reasonable price for gear of this quality.
I would not really recommend these for sparring or beginners to pugilistic sports. For everyone else, it’s really hard to go wrong with Fairtex BGV-1.
